Behind the scenes of a photoshoot

We usually talk about photography types, places, poses, art and whatnot. But rarely do we talk about what goes on behind the camera. What all does it take to get you that perfect shot? There are endless discussions on the time, concept, equipment etc. Breaking this whole process into small steps can simplify your work and help you make decisions.

We have noted down the process of getting that perfect shot for you. In this blog, you will be able to see the behind the scenes of a probable photo shoot and what it takes to have a successful photo shoot.

Step 1- Decide a concept

The first and foremost step of any process is knowing what is to be done. Same in this case, before any photo shoot you need to decide what sort of concept you are working on. For example, it could be portrayed photography, baby photography or nature photography. Every type of photo session requires a different concept. Some of them are given below.

  • What do you require? Maybe a car or a book or an animal. Depending upon the concept of the photoshoot you need to decide the feeling you want to evoke. Is there any movie scene you want to depict or a story by photography?

  • Search different types of photo session concepts and ideas of props with the help of social media sites like Pinterest.

Step 2- Choose the right location

Once you have decided on your concept and details, it's time to choose the best location for all of it to come true. Determining a good place for having a professional photoshoot is a tough nut to crack. Answer some questions for yourself.

  • What type of concept are you playing at?

  • Do you want a natural location or a custom set?

  • How much would it cost to rent the place or props?

  • What about the light? Does the place have natural sunlight or does it require artificial lighting?

Step 3- Picking the Equipments

When you have selected your location and decided on the concept the next thing you need to decide is the equipment you would want. Below are the types of equipment you must know-:

  • Portrait - In portrait photography, the focus is more on the object's face. The photographer should need equipment that has a good focal lens and can capture facial expressions correctly. Mirrorless and DSLR can be a good choice for these.

  • Wedding photographer - A wedding photograph has a lot of fluctuations. From different setups to concepts to wide angles and a lot of colours. For this, the photographer should take a variety of lenses with him or her. For example wide-angle lens and macro lens.

  • Sports photography - Sports photographers require lenses that can capture speedy movements and tracks. So a camera with a high shutter speed would work better.

Step 4- Make sure your subject is comfortable

Now that you know the concept, location and equipment you need, now is the time to start the photoshoot. But before the commencement of any photoshoot make sure that your subject is comfortable with you. How you conduct yourself with the people around you makes the most of it. For example, if your subject is a baby you need to make sure that the child has everything he or she needs. From a comfortable bed to eating supplies.

Communication is the key. Communicate with your clients to create a comforting environment and the photoshoot may go smoothly.

Step 5 - Create an environment

During the day of the photoshoot make sure that you create a familiar environment for better productivity. For example, you can choose to play music during the photoshoot or decide to play games and chat with little kids so that they are in the desired mood.

Step 6 - Experiment

If you are a photographer you know what it takes to get the best shots. Therefore don't stop experimenting. You can always discuss with the subjects what they want and simultaneously decide on the poses, concepts and moments.

Now you know what all it takes for that perfect photography session. It takes days of discussions, chats and ideas to bring upon a concept and make it into a reality. We can safely say it takes an awful lot to have the best possible results. But then all's well that ends well. And the end is beautiful memories for a lifetime.
